The 16th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta

Join the adventure and excitement of the 16th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta on February 10 to 13, 2011 at Clark Special Economic Zone, Angeles City.

The Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is in celebration of the Centennial Year of airplanes in the Philippine skies.

It was announced on the press lunch yesterday that 27 balloons will participate in this year’s festivities.

The upcoming Fiesta will also feature larger grounds, more activities for the kids, and more participation from aviation school.

Most hot air balloons are made of ripstop nylon which is similar to the material for parachutes. Most balloons are from 60,000 cubic feet to 140,000 cubic feet. However, some are small enough to fly from a harness on the back and some are capable of flying 16 people or more. Most balloons tower from 60′ to 90′ tall.

The first modern hot-air balloon flight was made by Ed Yost on October 22, 1960 from Bruning, Nebraska.

Forest fires are often caused by broken glass or by cigarette ends which people carelessly throw away. Yesterday the firemen examined the ground carefully, but were not able to find any broken glass. They were also quite sure that a cigarette end did not start the fire. This morning, however, a firemen accidentally discovered the cause. He noticed the remains of a snake which was wound round the electric wires of a 16,000-volt power line. In this way, he was able to solve the mystery. The explanation was simple but very unusual. A bird had snatched up the snake from the ground and then dropped it on to the wires. The snake then wound itself round the wires. When it did so, it sent sparks down to the ground and these immediately started a fire.

Angeles City - In 1796, the gobernadorcillo or town head of San Fernando, Don Ángel Pantaleón de Miranda, and his wife, Doña Rosalia de Jesus, along with some followers, staked out a new settlement, which they named Culiat because of the abundance of vines of that name in the area. The new settlers cleared the woodland and cultivated the area for rice and sugar farming. Don Ángel built his first house with light materials at the northwest corner of the intersection of Sapang Balen and the road going towards the town of Porac. It was later donated to the Roman Catholic Church and became a cemetery known as the "Campo Santong Matua," the site where the Nepomuceno Coliseum is situated.
