Prostitution in Angeles City

June 19, 2009

Prostitution in the Philippines is illegal. It is a serious crime with penalties ranging up to life imprisonment for those involved in trafficking. It is covered by the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act. Prostitution is sometimes illegaly available through brothels (also known as casa), bars, karaoke bars (also known as KTVs), Massage Parlors, street walkers and escort service.

The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women - Asia Pacific (CATW-AP), quoting from Kyodo News, estimated that in 1998 there were 400,000 prostituted women in the Philippines. The International Labor Organization estimated that in 1993/94 there were nearly half a million prostitutes in the country

Prostitution catering to local customers and foreigners . Media attention tends to focus on those areas catering to sex tourism, primarily through bars staffed by bargirls. Cities where there is a high incidence of prostitution are Angeles, Olongapo, Subic Bay and Pasay City , with the customers usually foreign businessmen from East Asian and Western nations.

Prostitution in Olongapo City and Angeles City was highly prominent during the time of the U.S. military bases called Subic Bay Naval Base and Clark Air Base, respectively. When Mount Pinatubo, a volcano, erupted in 1991, it destroyed most of Clark Air Base and the US closed it down in 1992.

Most of the associated prostitution trade closed with it, but when the mayor of Manila, Alfredo Lim, closed down the sex industry area of Ermita in Manila during his first term, many of the businesses moved to Angeles, finding a new customer base among sex tourists.

Other tourist areas such as Cebu have also developed a high profile prostitution industry.

Have you any idea where a 500,000 thousand women are going to findd jobs to suport their families,if prostitution where to end today..People are starving now with the economy as it is, try puting a half million women and men out of work..I personaly see nothing wrong or inmoral with a choice of what a person preforms with their bodies, especialy when it comes to feeding thier families..get real,if you want to stop prostitution, find the jobs to replace them first, GOOD LUCK.. you should be greatful that you have the Sex tourism coming in to the Phils.,that patronize the Hotels,Restuarants, jeepneys, taxis, malls, barbershops, shoe shops etc. what a shock itwould be to stop that trade..

About Angeles City

Angeles City - In 1796, the gobernadorcillo or town head of San Fernando, Don Ángel Pantaleón de Miranda, and his wife, Doña Rosalia de Jesus, along with some followers, staked out a new settlement, which they named Culiat because of the abundance of vines of that name in the area. The new settlers cleared the woodland and cultivated the area for rice and sugar farming. Don Ángel built his first house with light materials at the northwest corner of the intersection of Sapang Balen and the road going towards the town of Porac. It was later donated to the Roman Catholic Church and became a cemetery known as the "Campo Santong Matua," the site where the Nepomuceno Coliseum is situated.

I am disappointed to see more bars along Don Juico Avenue onwards to Clarkview. When i left Angeles in 2004 there were hardly any but now there are too many. These bars have women, scantily dressed and parading themselves in plain view of everyone from 11a.m. onwards. Our children pass these roads each day and this is what they see. I remember Mayor Lazatin said he would put a stop to having more bars esp from Fields Avenue to Clarkview but the opposite seems to have happened. Don Juico borders Clark Field. Is this the type of tourism we hope to attract here? I know you well enough, Mayor Blue Boy, to be an upright, God-fearing man and I know you will do the right thing here. i came back to Angeles City to revive my eco-adventure tour program here and bring back a livelier, more proactive tourism program. I know if we clean up the red light district, we can bring in better tourists.

Also, is there any solution to the regular traffic along Don Juico near checkpoint? Too many vendors, illegally parked vehicles and no enforcement. God bless you, Mayor Blue Boy.

The problem with being handed P11B supposedly for the NorthRail is that it was never used for that purpose. Should Mr.Pamintuan be questioned regarding the funds? Shouldn’t there be an accounting of sorts? The absence of any movement regarding northrail is glaring. It is sad that the people always have to put the bill so that corrupt officials could enjoy themselves.
